In my home, I love celebrating as much as I can for every single holiday. But the holiday I absolutely love celebrating is Valentines Day! And though my kids think Valentines is for their mom and dad (which is ew), or for boyfriends/girlfriends (also ew, except for my teenage daughter), I like to teach them that it’s also a celebrating love for everyone. So of course, I’m all about starting my family’s day with making breakfast in the shape of hearts. So these heart waffles are perfect for them. I mean, I’ll be honest, I’d make all of their food in the shape of hearts all day long and be all cheesy but my teenagers might give me some serious eye rolling for it. My youngest however still loves all of the cheesiness I can offer, so I’m doing it all while I can.
The great thing about these waffles is that a few ingredients have been switched out to create a healthier, chocolate waffle. Using half white and half wheat flour, replacing butter with canola oil, and adding vanilla greek yogurt. The best part is, one bite into these waffles and you’ll never even notice the healthier options. Win win!
The chocolate comes mostly from cocoa powder and also a small amount of semi-sweet chocolate chips. Use good chocolate chips, they add the best flavor and make for the perfect bite. I’m not kidding when I say the perfect bite. Mmm good! The vanilla greek yogurt compliments the chocolate so well and adds great texture to the waffle. Just make sure you use a vanilla flavored greek yogurt or even low fat vanilla yogurt will work great. If you use regular greek yogurt, the batter will be a bit more thick and give a whole different flavor.
I have a waffle maker where the waffles come out heart shaped (obviously) that I purchased several years ago. The one I have is no longer available but you can find similar ones like this one or this one. Or you can use a regular waffle maker. I personally love a good belgian waffle maker. Whichever you choose, these waffles are sure to start your Valentines day out great!
I like to serve these up with just a small amount of whipping cream or you can go all out and serve them a la mode with some vanilla frozen yogurt instead of regular ice cream, to keep the calories and sugar content a little lower. I promise though, that these waffles will be a tradition in your home as well every year for Valentines!
